Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this service.

Do I have to file a U.S. return if I live abroad and owe nothing?

In most cases, yes. U.S. citizens and green card holders are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so a return is generally required once you meet the filing threshold — even if exclusions or credits reduce your tax to zero. Forms like the FBAR and Form 8938 can also be required on their own.

Should I use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion or the Foreign Tax Credit?

It depends on your income, the country you live in, and your long-term plans. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) can exclude a large amount of earned income, while the Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) offsets U.S. tax with foreign taxes already paid — often better in high-tax countries and preserving room for retirement contributions. We model both and use the combination that produces the best result for you.

What is the FBAR, and when do I have to file one?

The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) reports foreign financial accounts when their combined value exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year. It's filed separately from your tax return with FinCEN, and the penalties for missing it are steep — so we verify every account and file it as part of your engagement.

I'm several years behind on filing from abroad. Can you help me catch up?

Yes. Many Americans abroad simply didn't know they had to file. If your past non-compliance was non-willful, the IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures usually let you get fully current with no penalty. We handle the amended returns, FBARs, and required certification — see our Streamlined Offshore page.
